Sumptuous Lunch....

...and if you're like me who have been missing the food I grew up eating, a sumptuous lunch [or any other meal for that matter] does not involve steak or any of those 'fancy' sounding meals you only read about.

Rice, tomatoes, [fried] fish and kamote tops [talbos ng kamote]. That's S-U-M-P-T-U-O-U-S lunch for me...and that's what I just had for lunch. I have not been 'harvesting' my greens for the last few weeks so you can only imagine how much leaves they have on them. I didn't forget about them though. I just thought I'd let them 'flourish' a little more....and flourish they did in about 2 weeks. I actually had to cut several of the stems already because they're getting quite long. The result? I probably have 2 more 'sumptuous' meals in the days to come. Woo hooo.....

The BIG Switch....

Since we moved in this house, we’ve always had cable TV because we just transferred here what we had in the old house. Moving is always a stressful time so we chose to lessen it by just sticking it out with the old provider. We even got the bundle plan so we would only deal with one company. That didn’t work out well so a few months ago we decided to switch our phone and internet with another company but kept the cable with the old provider. As days went by, we’re getting more and more frustrated with our cable provider primarily because of the over the top charges from them. So we’ve decided to go back to Direct TV Satellite ASAP. We used to have them but for some unknown reasons, we went to cable. I know we didn’t have problems with them when we had them before so I really can’t remember why we chose to go with cable in the first.

Anyway, we ordered that flat screen TV that we’ve been planning to get since moving here. We wanted to wait for the armoire that we ordered before we get the new TV but due to some unexpected event [read: old TV broke down...yay!], we went ahead and ordered the TV already. Hubby is now busy getting ready for the TV, i.e. wiring, etc. He wants everything in place before the Direct TV guy comes sometime in the next couple of weeks. Right now, it’s a bit of a mess in the living room because everything is on the floor while he checks wirings, etc. We haven’t watched anything today because of that. Since we can’t watch TV, we’re kind of doing our thing now. The little one is busy in her bedroom tinkering with everything while I am here blogging and/or working. I can’t wait till we get our Directv Satellite installed because we are getting some great stuff with the deal we’re planning in getting....and because I can't wait to get rid of our cable provider. Yeah!

Nawawala ang aking 'Nanay' [Missing my 'Nanay']

It's been 9 years today since she passed. It's been 9 na taon mula sa araw na siya ay lumipas. I've been thinking about her for days now thinking about the ' what ifs '. Ako ng pag-iisip tungkol sa kanya para sa araw ngayon pag-iisip tungkol sa 'kung ano ang ifs'. I know I can't dwell on those 'what ifs' but I can't help it everytime I think about her [and my Tatang]... Alam ko hindi ko tumira sa mga 'kung ano ang ifs' ngunit hindi ko maaaring makatulong ito everytime tingin ko tungkol sa kanya [at ang aking Tatang] ... which is more often than I care to admit. na kung saan ay mas madalas kaysa sa pag-aalaga ko sa aminin.

I've been told by a lot of my relatives, especially her siblings, and friends that I look like her. Ako ng sinabi ng isang pulutong ng aking mga kamag-anak, lalo na ang kanyang kapatid, at mga kaibigan na ang hitsura ko sa kanya. I'd like to think so too. Gusto ko ng mag-isip kaya masyadong. But as the years go by, I've realized that our similarities don't end there. Yes, I am. I'm posting non-stop this morning! If you checked the time stamps of the last few posts, they're just minutes apart. Don't be surprised. It seems that it helps to calm my nerves one way or another. I guess it's true that 'writing' [blogging maybe?] is therapeutic. I'm still a wee bit nervous but it's a little better now.

After this post, I may just do surf the net again. I've been doing that a lot as well. I'm trying to look for Christmas presents already so I won't be cramming come December. I also have to look for some stuff for the house. We're still looking for the TV mount that we need. The husband is also looking at ping pong tables because he wants to teach the little one how to play, yes, ping pong. I also want to learn how to play it. I really don't play any kind of sport and I think this may be the one I will actually enjoy doing. Maybe...

What to Do?

In about 3 months, an event that my high school classmates and I are very much looking forward to will take place. Our Silver Jubilee. Understandably, everyone [I think] in the batch is excited about this great event. I am too although I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. There's a few of us in the batch who are out of the country. Even if that's the case, we make sure that we are all informed of everything that's being planned. Thanks to the wonders of technology we're able to update each other almost instantly either by emails, texts and/or our batch's blog. Yes, we have a blog which I started primarily for our Silver Jubilee.

Last night, a friend in California called me while she was driving to work. She is married to another batch mate of ours. They're the only couple in the batch who ended up being married to each other. When we started planning early last year, they were definite that they will attend the jubilee. Now? Not sure anymore if they're going to attend. She got pregnant with their 3rd child and gave birth to her earlier this year.

Anyway, because of the pregnancy and birth of their 3rd bundle of joy, she's having second thoughts if they will be able to make it. The baby of course is the main reason for that since she's too young to travel thousands of miles. Another thing, she still has the 'pregnancy' weight and she wants to lose some of it at least so she won't look pregnant during the reunion. She heard about Solo Slim but she's not sure if she wants to take it or not to help her get rid of the excess weight she put on. Oh well, I guess we just never run out of reasons, eh? As for me? I'll write my reasons later on. Who knows? I may win the lotto before that big reunion. If that happens, I can quit my jobs and have lipo [really?] to prepare me [and my body] for the that once in a lifetime event. LOL....nah, I don't think I'd want any kind of surgery to get rid of my 'baby(???) fat.

It's Thursday already? I know that it comes every week but it still catches me by surprise whenever it happens. I'm waiting for it though especially this week since I'm having a nerve-wrecking one. It's my fourth day [technically] with the new gig and I'm still trying to get used to it. I'm not sure how long it will take before I get used to it but I'm guessing I will always be a little nervous since there's no way of knowing what I'll get until I pick up the phone. I'm trying to calm my nerves though by being prepared and by surfing the net for free online auctions. It's fun to check out these auction sites because there's a bunch of stuff that are being auctioned at very affordable prices. I even found one that doesn't require any fees to register and no fees for buying or selling. I'm trying to take it easy though because I might end up buying something that I don't really need at the moment.

Flat Screen TV

We've been planning in replacing our old TV set since we moved here in our house. The husband already picked out the flat screen TV that he wants to get. Unfortunately, it's still all that for now...a plan. Actually, we can afford to get it now [I think] but here we are still using the ancient TV we've had since who knows when. Why you may ask? The guy we commissioned to build us the armoire [that will hold all the other stuff that an entertainment center needs] is still working on it. A lot of things happened to his personal life which unfortunately led to his shop being shut down for a few weeks. We're trying to be patient but we already gave him an ultimatum since it's way past the agreed upon delivery date.

In the meantime, we are looking at mounts that we will need for the TV. Looking for that perfect mount is proving to be not so easy. There are a bunch of choices out there that we keep changing our minds which one we really want. I thought picking out the TV will be the harder task. Boy, was I very much mistaken. I just hope we make up our mind on the mount before we get that armoire. Ha!

It seems to be the question I'm asking myself quite a lot these days....from trivial to very important things. The phone situation pretty much gets me all stressed out. It's hooked up already but I've been experiencing static as well as cross-lines while I'm using it. It's crazy because I need to concentrate on the call and with all the voices I'm hearing, that's impossible. A repairman came yesterday. Hopefully that fixed the problem. I won't know that for sure until I get calls in that phone. After this, I wonder what's next?

Since I asked to be taken off the schedule from work yesterday, I suddenly had some free time on my hands. What did I do? I went online to read more about what Gonzaga University offers as far as an Online master degree is concerned. I'm really serious about pursuing a masters degree and I would love to do it online. This is why I'm reading more about this university. So far so good as they say. The university is one of the top 3 schools in the west per US News and Report and called one of the universities by The Princeton Review and Forbes. It also offers a lot of its masters degrees online. Aside from that Kiplingers Personal Finance also ranks it as best value among private universities. Now all I have to do is to start working on my schedule to squeeze in this new 'plan' of mine.

The "Appendix"....

While browsing the news online last night, I came across a news article [study] that disputes what we've always believed..that the appendix is a useless organ in our body. That's what science books are telling us anyway with the help of Darwin's Evolution theory of course. Darwin believed that our appendix is just a "vestgial organ" that served its purpose and is now a useless "remnant" of the past.

Apparently, that is not the case at all. Aaccording to this Yahoo article anyway, the appendix is actually a useful organ and that it's showing some great potentials in the field of medicine. Here's an excerpt from the news article and I quote:

Parker and his colleagues recently suggested that the appendix still served as a vital safehouse where good bacteria could lie in wait until they were needed to repopulate the gut after a nasty case of diarrhea. Past studies had also found the appendix can help make, direct and train white blood cells.

Grand Getaway...

It’s been more than 8 years since I moved here in the US. That means I’ve also been married for 8 years. As a matter of fact we just had our 8^th wedding anniversary about a week ago. We didn’t go anywhere to celebrate. We did what we love doing, staying in. LOL. A lot of factors contributed to that but it’s mainly the bad weather and me preparing for my new gig. Maybe in our 10^th year anniversary we can do something special…something big like go on a vacation somewhere outside the US. Not the Philippines though because we’re hoping to visit family and friends before that. So where can we go? How about somewhere in Europe where we can rent holiday cottages? If that happens, I think that will a first for me. In the past, we either just stayed with family or friends when we went on vacations so it’s exciting to me to even think about renting a cottage while on vacation.

I almost went to Europe right before I got married. A very good friend was about to wed her European fiancé, now her husband, and I was slated to be one of the bridesmaids. My friend and I took turns in looking at cottages scotland in preparation for that ‘vacation’. But as fate would have it, the vacation never took place. Why? I got married that’s why. My getting married was one would call a ‘surprise’…to me, to my friends and my family and my husband and his family and friends. Hey, it’s been 8 years since then and hubby and I are still going strong with a little precious girl to boot. Do I regret not being able to go on that grand vacation to Europe? Not one bit. But like I said earlier in the post, I would still like to go there and rent one of the Devon cottages I’ve seen only in pictures. Hopefully, we will be able to afford it when our 10^th wedding anniversary arrives. Yep, that will be one grand getaway for us so we better start saving for it now, eh?

Another Day...

Here's hoping today will a better day than yesterday. Ha! That's always a wish I make when my day starts regardless what happened the previous day. It can only get better, right? Or at least that's what I wish for anyway.

Nothing much happening around here. Right now I have a load of laundry in the dryer. The little one is doing her school work. I'm sitting here typing away while waiting. I'd leave it at that. New Adventure

That's what I want to call my new work-at-home job. It's an adventure alright since it's something entirely new to me. I'm still adjusting to it and trying to learn how to do it right. I know it will take time to get used to it but I'm hoping that I'll get the hang of it as soon as possible. Truth be told, I've been a nervous wreck since last week but most especially today. I don't know how tomorrow will go but I'm praying that I won't be as nervous.

Speaking of adventure, I've been thinking of going back to school. Well, going to an online school that is. I've been checking Masters degrees online for the last few weeks. I am not sure yet what I want to take but I may have found the school for me, Gonzaga University. Several of its masters degrees are offered online so that's really convenient for me. But that's not the only reason I like it. It's ranked third [yep, number 3] in the west by US News and World Report. Not too many top ranked schools offer courses online because of their belief that the quality of education is compromised if it's offered online. Gonzaga University obviously believes the opposite and I can only applaud them for going against because it gives us the chance to further our education without sacrificing quality at our own pace in the comfort of our own homes.

He Is Watching You...

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables. He picked up a CD player to place in his sack, when a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark, saying, "Jesus is watching you."

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, "Jesus is watching you."

Rainy Sunny Weekend...

How cool is that? Not cool if you ask me or the husband. The weather is just getting more and more unpredictable around here. It's been cloudy the whole week but it never really rained, just a little drizzle here and there. This weekend, it's sunny and it's been raining. Odd, isn't it?

Hubby was able to do one of his weekend chores which is mowing. He had to hurry through it though. He wasn't able to do the other things he wanted to outside because of the rain. Instead he just searched online for the materials like knobs, screws, and some other parts that I am not familiar with which they will need for the bowl they will be working on soon.

As for me, I did some household chores and did a little work with my new job. I've been on call with that job since last week although I have not 'officially' started because of the phone situation. But they've called me a couple of times so I kinda' had a taste of what I will be doing for them. The new line was hooked up yesterday, finally. I'll be good to go with my new gig and I'll be starting this Monday.

And the little one, she did what she does best...recording herself. Yep, she made a few home movies again. She also recorded herself using her videoke machine. I'll try to upload one of her 'work' as soon as I get the chance.

That's our weekend in a nutshell...err post. Nothing exciting but it's been relaxing...and that's the way we like it. How's yours?

Incompetent, Unreliable....

Two words I'd use to describe our phone provider. If we have a choice, we would have ditched them a long time ago...but we don't so we're sticking it out with them...much to our dismay. We only have 2 providers in our area. We already tried the other one and they're not any better than what we have right now.

When I landed my new WAHJ, we decided to get another line dedicated for it. We contacted our provider as soon as we could and ordered the new line. We went over our present plan and modified it to accommodate the additional line and scheduled the 'hook up'. We thought it's all settled...NOT! Originally, a tech was supposed to come over last Friday, no one showed up. When we called they said the order was on hold. Fine. We told them to take it off the 'on hold' status and we're proceeding with the order.We went over the terms of the new plan [again] and they even provided us with the new number. The tech was supposed to come over yesterday, Monday.

All set? Nope. Monday came and nobody showed from the phone company. We called them...guess what they said??? The order is still on hold. Sheeesshhh!! But you know what's crazy? The other parts of the order has been activated already so how can they say it's still on hold? I have no idea but that's what they said. What choice do we have but re-schedule again.

But you know what really stinks?I have to call my new employer and let them know that much as I want to start working [yesterday], I couldn't because of something beyond my control.....incompetent & unreliable people calling themselves: CUSTOMER SUPPORT! Yeah right!

Reunions

Here, there and everywhere. I've mentioned numerous times here that my high school batch is celebrating 25 years this year. Silver jubilee if you may. I still don't know if I can attend that one although I would love to. My batch mates back home are very busy now since it's only a few more months before the big day. Hopefully everything goes well.

Aside from that reunion, another reunion is in the works as well, a family reunion that is. A cousin is organizing this one. I don't have a lot of relatives here in the US but the reunion is planned around an Aunt's birthday who resides in New York. Just like my high school reunion, I'm not sure I can attend this one. I just told my cousin that I'll help with the preparations. She already asked me to look into different places that do Syracuse catering. My aunt is turning 85 already so it was decided that the venue for the reunion/birthday party would have to be where she is. Hopefully, I'll be able to help my cousins in making this event a success even if I won't be able to attend.

Airplane Mode, Part 2...

The in-flight "safety lecture" and pre-flight announcements on airplanes are sometimes spiced up a bit at some airlines. Here is the second part of some real examples that have been heard or reported:

"And from the pilot during his welcome message: "Delta Airlines is pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!"

"Heard on Southwest Airlines just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City: The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "That was quite a bump, and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault. It was the asphalt."

"Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas, on a particularly windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!"

"Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing. "We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."

"An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the Passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline." He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said,"Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?" "Why, no, Ma'am," said the pilot. What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"

"After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the attendant came on with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal."

"Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of US Airways."

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax...OH, MY GOD!" Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants! A passenger in Coach yelled, "That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!"

Heard on a Southwest Airline flight. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing and if you can light 'em, you can smoke 'em."

LIFE's calling....

... that's why blogging has to take a back seat for a while. But it does not mean I am going to stop blogging. Not by a long shot. If you've been visiting here the last couple of weeks, you probably noticed already that I have not been blogging 'as much'. Part of the reason is what one blogger friend calls "BO" [hey, C!]....'burn out'. Yep, I am now at point where writing something for my blogs has become some kind of a 'drag'...like right now. I guess I'm too preoccupied to concentrate as I have a million other things going on in my life right now.

Anyway, aside from the 'million things' that I need to do before I embark on this new 'adventure' of mine, I am also busy looking into getting a life insurance for me and the husband. I only have this week to do this so it needs to be done ASAP. I used to have a few life insurance policies when I was still single but I wasn't able to continue them when I got married and moved. I could have but I didn't have the chance to make arrangements with my agent before I left the Philippines. I've always felt that because of life's uncertainties, I should have some kind of an insurance that can help my loved ones one way or another.

My Poor Blogs...

I've been neglecting them for the past few days. I was supposed to update yesterday since I wasn't working but....

Anyway, I'm around. I'm not as busy but I will be in the near future...like next week. Any guesses? Here's a clue. Yep, I did it!!!!

In the meantime, I have to hit the hay. It was a busy day today because some work was released unexpectedly. Thanks for dropping by...

It's the Weekend but....

Yep, still busy. I just had to do a post real quick but I'll be off the blogging land at least for a day or two more.

Help is Available...

For the past several weeks, even months I think, the husband has been toying with the idea of buying a property in the Philippines. This is nothing new to me because he already told me when we first got together that there’s a big chance that we will retire there. Life there is so much cheaper and less stressful compared to life here. But we’re not retiring yet so what’s up with all the searches online that he’s been doing lately? A couple of things brought this on actually. Not too long ago, we learned that a Filipina and her husband bought a house there recently at an unbelievable price. They’re moving there as early as mid of next year or after his compensation claims go through anyway. He was in an accident not too long ago and he may not be able to go back to work anymore so they’re planning to maximize whatever they get from the claim they are waiting on.

Compensation Claims are unheard of to me before I came over here because we just don’t hear much of those in the Philippines. Here in the US, it’s good to know that one can fight for claims when he gets in an accident that’s not his fault. Aside from that, it’s also good to know that there are places like Accidents Direct that assist people who got injured in accidents through no faults of their own. They even offer the ‘No Win No Fee’ which simply means that if the accident victims don’t get anything from their COMPENSATION CLAIMS, they are not obliged to pay those who help them. I don’t want to have any accident of any kind nor do I wish it to anyone else but knowing that there is help available out there surely puts my mind at ease in case something like an accident injury happens to me.
